Take a Stroll Through my Garden

Poppies

Ready to Burst at the Seams

Poppys are another plant that is well suited to the Maritime Pacific Northwest. I don't plant them, they plant them selves and I weed out most of them before I plant my veggies. Poppys should be planted in the fall for best results. They over winter as seed and sprout in the spring. These poppys are the same variety that opium is derived from. It is perfectly legal to grow them, just don't try to harvest the sap. I harvest lots of poppy seeds every year for making poppy seed bread.

The first picture was taken in May of 2000 and shows some very vigorous plants. Poppys are not picky but they still do best in fertile soil. The second picture was taken in June of 2000. Poppy seed pods ripen during our dry season and poppys are the only viable grain crop that can be grown in the Maritime North West.
